HOW IT ALL GOT STARTED

Rebekah has been playing violin and piano since she was 4yrs old, and singing at the young age of three. Her weekly lessons had her mastering the violin technique and piano proficiency by middle school. Performing was a natural calling when she sang her first voice solo for an entire congregation at the age of 6. She was hooked! She also was the 2nd chair violinist for four years in her high school orchestra. She pursued years of competitions in voice, piano, and violin on a statewide, national, and international level placing 1st, and 2nd place back to back in all three instruments.

After completing her counseling degree in SC, she was accepted into the Music College at Bowling Green State University. She earned her Bachelors of Science in Music with a concentration in Voice Performance and Music Pedagogy. There she was handpicked to study with the former Metropolitan Opera soprano, Myra Merritt. Under her coaching Rebekah built an extensive repertoire list, range, and pedagogical techniques. She performed multiple operas, such as “Die Fledermaus”, “Dialogues of the Carmelites”, “The Pirates of Penzance”, “Princess Ida” and “Jack and the Beanstalk”! Along with her pursuits in opera, she also performed solo and duet recitals in voice and piano.

After graduating she moved to Munich Germany to study abroad independently for a year. There I took intensive German language courses, and traveled around Europe immersing myself into their rich art and musical filled culture. In Munich I was apart of a contemporary band that performed weekly.

Returning from her trip abroad, Rebekah landed a teaching job at Vaughan Music Studios as a voice and piano instructor. After coaching for over 3 years her student roster quickly grew to 65+ students per week. She made the decision to step away and start her own studio in New Albany in 2019. The studio was and is continuing to thrive.

Rebekah’s students have performed in countless recitals, live and online music performances, musicals, as well as local, national, and international competitions. Many of them have since been accepted into the top musical colleges in the nation; E.g.Berklee College of Music, Baldwin Wallace Conservatory, & Cleveland Institute of Music.

Alongside her hours of coaching and running a music studio, Rebekah is a songwriter, and live performing artist. She enjoys keeping herself sharp by attending international music pedagogy forms as well as competing in national and international voice competitions all across the country.

Q & A with the coach

Q: How long have you been teaching?

A: I taught my first music lesson to my little brother when I was 14 years old. He was 6. And I gotta say, he picked up the basics of violin in no time! But the official answer is that I’ve been teaching professionally since 2014.

Q: What is your favorite style of music to sing and/or play?

A: Definitely Classical music… Broadway is a close second!

- But I’ll take any chance I can get to sing live Jazz music!!

Q: If you could have any role (both Broadway & Opera) what would it be?

A: Either Anastasia from Anastasia or Christine from the Phantom of the Opera. For the Opera choice, …boy this is hard… either Musetta from La Bohéme or Cunégonde from Candide. My favorite aria from Candide is “Glitter and be Gay”!

Q: How long have you been playing violin and piano?

A: Violin was my first instrument at the age of 4. I then quickly picked up piano the following year.

Q: What made you want to study Music with Voice as your main instrument?

A: I had grown up singing in church choirs my whole life, but I didn't’t find my passion for singing until I began competing. Funny thing is, I never placed in my voice solos, but I always placed 1st and 2nd in violin and piano! I never let that discourage me though, I just knew I needed to grow and pursue professional coaching. So I ran into BGSU’s Collage of Music with my least developed instrument and walked out 3 years later with a Music/Voice Performance degree absolutely thriving!

Q: Why coach private music lessons?

A: I had received private music lessons all my life from hometown music teachers to world-class professionals. The instruction I received from my coaches was individually focused on my needs as an aspiring musician and performer. My desire as a private music coach is to bring the same concentrated instruction to the individual needs of my students. Private instruction is unique in that it gives the student the full attention of a professional for a concentrated amount of time. This I believe provides the student the best opportunity in a grace filled environment to grow, and experience victory after victory!

Q: What’s your favorite snack?

A: Oh this is an easy one, my homemade coconut oil stovetop POPCORN!!!

Q: Where can we listen to your recordings?

A: I would love to have you visit either my growing Soundcloud or YouTube pages! You can also hear me live at the many recitals I put on throughout the year. DM me for the most current information!
